Rwandan MP arrested

Rwandan Police this Tuesday arrested Ashinzwuwera Alexandre Dumas, a Member of Parliament on suspicion of brutally beating and injuring his 12-year old brother. Ashinzwuwera, 26, who belongs to PSP party is now being held at Nyamirambo police station here in Kigali but his file has been handed to Prosecution. In an exclusive interview with our Top Partner station Contact FM, police spokesman Theos Badege confirmed the youthful MP is in police custody.

Polisi Denis, the deputy speaker in the Chamber of Deputies has confirmed that parliament waived his immunity through a vote after receiving a request from the Prosecutor General. “As provided in our Constitution in Article 69, yesterday we debated the Prosecutor General’s request and voted to waive his immunity which requires a three fifths majority,” said Polisi Denis, the deputy speaker of the lower chamber.
Kanyange Phoebe, the leader of PSP which arrested MP represents in Parliament said she is not aware of Ashinzwuwera’s arrest but promised to give a comment after getting more details. Ashinzwuwera has been a Member of Parliament representing PSP since 2008.
