The warm dry weather and strong winds have increased the chance of forest fires in the Netherlands. A Code Orange alert has been issued in the Veluwe nature reserve and the eastern province of Gelderland, central Utrecht and nature areas near Hilversum.

Code orange means the fire brigade will be deployed with extra equipment and more fire fighters, if any reports of forest or heath fires come in. The area is being monitored by observers in airplanes. Code yellow has been issued in the Provinces of Limburg and Overijssel. A fire broke out on the Wadden island of Vlieland on Saturday, burning a natural area equivalent to two football fields.
