The Dutch tip line for reporting crime anonymously has seen an increase in reports of drugs-related incidents since the “weed pass” was introduced in three southern provinces.
Since 1 May, only people who are legally resident in the Netherlands may register as members of a coffee shop where they can buy small quantities of cannabis. The regulation was introduced in an attempt to stem the wave of "drug tourists" from Germany, Belgium and France who regularly crossed the Dutch border to buy soft drugs.
The director of the tip line, Meld Misdaad Anoniem, reports that since then, there have been an increasing number of calls concerning drugs dealers on the street and in private houses. There had already been reports of increased problems because of the weed pass and last month, police in one of the provinces affected reported that almost 400 people had been detained for drugs offences since May 1.
The new regulation is scheduled to take effect in the rest of the Netherlands on January 1 2013. A number of local politicians, including Amsterdam mayor Eberhaad van der Laan, are fiercely opposed because of the likely increase in illegal drugs dealing on the street.
