Two weeks after the United Nations Security Council created a Special Court for Lebanon to try those responsible for the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, a car bomb killed Walid Eido, a prominent member of the anti-Syrian parliamentary majority headed by Hariri's son. On Reuters TV, Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora immediately requested "that the international court also address this crime." The Special Tribunal can "with the consent of the Security Council," extend its jurisdiction to other assassinations of "similar nature and gravity." Five attacks have taken place in Lebanon in less than three weeks. "The same people who assassinated Representative Walid Eido assassinated Rafic Hariri," affirmed Rafik Hariri's son, Saad Harir, on television.
