Abilio Soares, the last Indonesian governor of East Timor, who was sentenced in 2002 to three years' imprisonment, was acquitted on appeal on 4 November by the Indonesian Supreme Court, reports Reuters. The Court found that a civilian could not be held responsible for the violence committed in 1999 during the territory's accession to independence when the army was in power at the time. Soares was the only Indonesian leader imprisoned for crimes against humanity committed in East Timor.
